In this context, it is important to know that the threads / powder have a very long shelf life due to the ingredients they contain. However, sunlight causes the color values to drop (it fades) and air causes the aroma to evaporate. We therefore recommend that you use our aroma bags or spice aluminum cans. Which is better - saffron threads or powder?

Typically, most people shop for thread and freshly grind it in a mortar before using it. If you want to save yourself this work step, powder is used. The advantages of powder are more effective color as it will spread better in the dish. For example, powder is better suited for baking or the production of pasta (e.g. spaetzle). However, you can quickly overdose with powder, which is why caution is advised here.

The plant / botany for saffron (Crocus Sativus)

From a botanical point of view it is a very interesting plant! As we know it as a spice - it's just the orange-red pistil threads inside the purple flower of a crocus species! It is the "Crocus Sativus".

Many people think the crocus is an onion plant! But completely wrong: Saffron is a perennial bulbous plant. It comes from the iris family. Unlike our native species of crocuses, the saffron bulb does not grow until autumn and remains in the ground for the rest of the year.
